John D. "Sonny" Kubina Sr.

John D. "Sonny" Kubina Sr., 84, of Banning, died Wednesday, Sept. 26, 2018, in Excela Health Frick Hospital, Mt. Pleasant, surrounded by his family. He was born July 3, 1934. He was preceded in death by his infant daughter, Debbie, in 1961; son, James D. "Jimmy" Kubina, in 2002; and in-laws, George and Mary Walters. Sonny was an Army veteran. Prior to his retirement, he was a heavy equipment operator, having worked for S and P Coal in Burgettstown for 25 years, and was proud of having never missed a day of work in 25 years. He had worked for Twilight Industries for many years prior. Sonny was also a bartender at Eleanor's Hotel in Smithton for more than 20 years, and worked for B and J General Construction in West Newton. He had currently worked with his son, Johnny Jr. (Kubina Remodeling), until his illness took over. He enjoyed hunting, playing cards, horseshoes and especially fishing with his grandkids at their family home in Mt. Jewett; spending time with his family was always a special memory. Sonny is survived by the love of his life for 59 years, JoAnne (Walters) Kubina; son, John D. (Debbie) Kubina Jr., of Perryopolis; a daughter, Jackie "Missy" (Randy) Wright Sr., of Smithton; four special grandchildren, Angie (John) Ritz, Amanda (Jeremy) Janos, Randy (Ashley) Wright Jr., and John D. Kubina III; nine special great-grandchildren, Madison and Mason Ritz, Hayden and Lacey Janos, Nativity, Eden, Noah and Eli Wright and Brooklyn Kubina; numerous nieces and nephews; and great-nieces and great-nephews. Sonny will be dearly missed by his family, many friends and neighbors. There will be no public visitation per Sonny's wishes, a private memorial service will be held at a later date. JOSEPH W.
