Max Vozel

September 15, 1920 ~ December 13, 2017 (age 97) 97 Years Old


Max Vozel, 97, of Herminie, died Wednesday, Dec. 13, 2017, in Excela Health Westmoreland Hospital, Greensburg. He was born Sept. 15, 1920, in Herminie, son of the late Frank and Anna (Mur) Vozel. Prior to joining the Army, Max had worked for the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) in Arizona. He was proud to be an Army veteran, having served as a staff sergeant during World War II. Prior to his retirement, he was a coal miner at the Newfield Mine in Plum for more than 50 years. Max was a member of St. Edward Church, Herminie SNPJ Lodge No. 87, the Herminie VFW Post 8427, where he was past commander and he also enjoyed bartending at both clubs. He loved spending time with his family and all his grandchildren. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Agnes H. (Beltz) Vozel, in 2011; granddaughter, Grace Agnes Yost; two sisters, Pauline Ergan and Mary Gigliotti; and eight brothers, infant brother Steve, Frank, George, Chuck, Kent "Sylvester", Leo, Ludwig and John Vozel. Max is survived by his two daughters, Maxine (David) Yuvan, of Greensburg, and Sharon (Jon) Matthews, of Florida; his son, Jerry (Mary Ann) Vozel, of Indiana; five grandchildren, Christine, Kimberly, Mary Beth, Kara and Zachary; four step-grandchildren, Scott, Tammi, Jennifer and Darren; nine great-grandchildren, Justin, Nicholas, Braden, Jacksen, Michael, Max and Mihret, Maxwell and Lilly; two great-great-grandchildren, Bayleigh and Maverick; a step-great-granddaughter, Ellie; a sister, Anna Kinkela, of Pittsburgh; and a sister-in-law, Irene Vozel, of North Huntingdon; and numerous nieces and nephews and great-nieces and great-nephews. Max will be dearly missed by his family, many friends he made over the years and special neighbors. Friends will be received from 2 to 8 p.m. Monday at the JOSEPH W. NICKELS FUNERAL HOME INC., 404 Sewickley Ave., Herminie, PA 15637, 724-446-7251. A funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Tuesday in St. Edward Church, Herminie.
