Albert S. "Al" Maturkanic Jr., 80, of Irwin, passed away Saturday, June 10, 2017, in Excela Health Westmoreland Hospital, Greensburg. He was born Oct. 14, 1936, in McKeesport, a son of the late Albert S. and Erma (Buri) Maturkanic Sr. Albert was a Marine veteran, having served during the Korean Conflict, and was a life member of the Port Vue Memorial American Legion Post 447. Prior to his retirement, Al was a machinist, having worked for Robertshaw Controls Co. in New Stanton for 22 years and Continental Can Co. in West Mifflin for 23 years. He was treasurer for the Steelworkers Union 1163 in Youngwood for more than 20 years. He was member of the West Hempfield Presbyterian Church in Irwin, an avid reader, enjoyed working on crossword puzzles "the real big ones" and loved to go fishing. Al is survived by his loving wife of 40 years, Twana (Tennant) Dawson Maturkanic; two sons, Lawrence E. Dawson, of Uniontown, and Marcus A. Dawson, of Irwin; sister-in-law, Karen L. Kifer, of Irwin; his kitty, Autumn, and his dog, Peka, whom he loved very much. He is also survived by special friend, Janice Nelson, and family friend, John J. Bankosh. The family would like to thank Dr. Adnan Nassur, his wonderful doctor of 12 years, whom Al loved, and special thank you to the great nurses of Westmoreland Hospital, Unit 2D, for their wonderful care and the love they showed Al for the past two weeks. He will be dearly missed by his family, friends and special neighbors. Friends will be received from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at the JOSEPH W.
