Carmine J. "Coco" Cortazzo Sr., 90, of Darragh, passed away peacefully Saturday, Sept. 19, 2015, at his home, surrounded by his family. He was born Aug. 22, 1925, in Wilmerding, son of the late Pasquale and Filomena (DiLuccio) Cortazzo. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his grandson, Kris David Cortazzo; a brother, Frank Cortazzo; and two sisters, Rose Pecora and Sarah Cortazzo. Coco was a World War II veteran, having served in the Navy. He was proud to be a gunner's mate third class, serving on the LCI 362 (Landing Craft Infantry) in the South Pacific. Prior to his retirement in 1989, he was a mail carrier in Wilmerding for 36 years. He was a member of St. Edward Church in Herminie, the Altar Rosary Society and Sunshine Club and the St. Vincent DePaul Society. He was also a member of the Herminie VFW Post 8427 and the Manor American Legion Post 472. Coco was an avid sports fan and especially enjoyed playing football and baseball with his grandchildren and teaching them all his moves. He loved to dance, listen to big band music and visit the casino. Carmine "Coco" is survived by his loving wife of 67 years, Angeline "Angie" (Veltri) Cortazzo; two sons, Carmine J. (Denise) Cortazzo Jr., of Home, Pa., and David (Cheryl) Cortazzo, of Greensburg; his daughter, Lynn (Andy) Garber, of Wheeling, W.Va.; six special grandchildren, Cori Anderson, Beth (John) Flickinger, Scott (Jamie) Cortazzo, Brett Garber, Amy Garber and Conor Cortazzo; five special great-grandchildren, Carter and Brody Cortazzo, Hayden and Garrett Flickinger and Addelyn Garber; sister-in-law, Ellare Cortazzo, of Port Vue; numerous nieces and nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews and great-great-nieces and -nephews. The family would like to thank the staff at Excela Health Hospice, especially Marlee and Jackie, for all their love and compassionate care. Friends will be received from 4 to 8 p.m. Tuesday and from 2 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at the JOSEPH W. NICKELS FUNERAL HOME INC., 404 Sewickley Ave., Herminie, PA 15637, 724-446-7251. A funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Thursday in St. Edward Church, Herminie. Entombment with full military honors will follow in Westmoreland County Memorial Park, Hempfield Township.
