Charles J. "Chuck" Short, 74, of Madison, passed away Thursday morning, Aug. 17, 2017, at his home, surrounded by his family. He was born June 25, 1943, in Arona, son of the late Charles L. and Martha G. (Adams) Short. Chuck graduated from Valley Forge Military Academy and St. Vincent College in Latrobe with a bachelor of science. He was an Army veteran, having served four years as a MP, stationed in Arlington, Va. Prior to his retirement, he worked for the US Postal Service as postmaster for more than 30 years, last working at the Rillton Post Office. He was a member of St. Edward Church in Herminie and an altar server for many years. He was an avid golfer and enjoyed going to his camp with his family and friends. He also loved visiting the casinos. Chuck is survived by his loving wife of 49 years, Marlene (Castle) Short; two sons, Kent (Mary) Short, of California, and Robert (Stephanie) Short, of Irwin; a daughter, Carole (David) Nicols, of New Stanton; seven special grandchildren, Ashley (Jason) Greene, Mallory, Dylan, Taylor and Max Short and Braden and Tatum Nicols; a sister, Jacquie (John) Ashworth, of Pittsburgh; and numerous nieces and nephews. Chuck's sense of humor and love for his family will forever be remembered. He will be dearly missed by his family, many friends and special neighbors. The family would like to thank Excela Health Hospice for all their love and comforting care. Friends will be received from 2 to 8 p.m. Sunday at the JOSEPH W. NICKELS FUNERAL HOME INC., 404 Sewickley Ave., Herminie, PA 15637, 724-446-7251. A funeral Mass will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Monday in St. Edward Church, Herminie. Interment with full military honors will follow in Westmoreland County Memorial Park, Hempfield Township.
