James M. Stokes, lovingly known as Jimmy, was born on March 27, 1957, in McKeesport, Pennsylvania, and passed away on Saturday, May 30, 2026, doing what he loved most—racing motocross. His passing came while pursuing a lifelong passion that brought him joy, friendship, and a sense of freedom throughout his life.
Jimmy was the son of the late James D. Stokes and Alice (Coleman) Stokes. He is survived by his beloved wife of 46 years, Mary (Miereczko) Stokes, his cherished daughter, Samantha Stokes, future son-in-law, Ed Ricci, his precious dog, Maisy, and brother, Robert (Brenda) Stokes. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his beloved son, James P. Stokes.
Jimmy graduated from Chesterton High School in 1976. During his high school years, he excelled in athletics, playing baseball and earning an invitation to the Philadelphia Phillies farm system. It was also during this time that he discovered two passions that would remain with him throughout his life: boxing and motocross racing. He began boxing on the South Side of Chicago and raced motocross at K&R Raceway and RedBud, laying the foundation for a lifetime of competition and adventure.
After graduation, Jimmy returned to his roots in Pennsylvania, where he met the love of his life, Mary. Their first date was fittingly at a motocross race, and together they built a life filled with love, family, and countless memories.
Never one to shy away from a challenge, he later competed in the Pittsburgh Golden Gloves, finishing as runner-up in the 160-pound division, pursued Taekwondo, earning his black belt, competed in MMA Tough Guys Tournament, finishing top 10 in the lightweight super fighters, and later opened his own kickboxing school, where he combined his knowledge of boxing and martial arts to teach and inspire others.
Jimmy’s adventurous spirit extended far beyond the ring and the racetrack. He competed in stock car racing at Motordrome Speedway and Jennerstown Speedway, embraced the thrill of skydiving, and enjoyed flying his ultralight aircraft over the West Newton area. Whether he was on a motorcycle, in a race car, in the air, or teaching others, Jimmy lived with a passion and enthusiasm that inspired everyone around him.
In recent years, Jimmy returned to motocross racing, rekindling the sport that had captured his heart as a young man. He treasured the camaraderie, friendships, and excitement that came with being part of the motocross community and thoroughly enjoyed reliving those cherished days on the track.
Jimmy was a true adrenaline seeker, but above all, he was a devoted husband, father, friend, mentor, and competitor. He lived life boldly, embracing every opportunity and adventure that came his way. He often remarked that his life had been nearly perfect, with the heartbreaking loss of his son being the only exception.
His legacy is one of determination, courage, passion, and an unwavering zest for life. Jimmy will be deeply missed by his family, friends, and all who had the privilege of knowing him, but his spirit will continue to live on in the stories, memories, and adventures he shared with those he loved.
“Some people simply exist, while others truly live. Jimmy was one of the rare few who lived every day to the fullest.”
Together, we will remember the moments that made him special and the legacy he leaves in our hearts .
