Laurine V. Batis Popp, formerly of Herminie, was born March 26, 1918, and passed peacefully in her sleep on the morning of Sunday, Sept. 20, 2015. To her longtime friends and family, she was known as “Beanie,” but was affectionately called "Petey" by her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Although she was born and raised in Sutersville, she spent most of her adult life in Herminie. She was the last surviving child of Andrew and Mary Cecchett, of Sutersville. She had seven siblings, Olive Ulrich, Mary Ganier, Matthew Cecchett, Josephine (Jack) Cochenour, Evelyn (Evie) Mayfield, Louis Cecchett and Betty Altimore. For 42 years, she was married to John Batis (deceased 1980), and together they owned and operated Batis Printing Co. of Herminie, which she continued to run for several years after his death. Her second marriage, of 15 years, was to Francis “Frank” Popp, of Sutersville. After his death in 2003, she moved to New Jersey to be near her daughter and her family. Laurine is survived by her two children; her daughter, Laurine Rocca and husband, Albert “Al” Rocca, of Eastampton, N.J., and her son, John D. Batis and wife, Karen (Mickey) Batis, of Taos, N.M. There are also four grandsons, David and Christopher Rocca, Jeffrey and Christopher Batis; and six great-grandchildren, Matthew and Kyle Rocca, Gizela and Aniela Rocca, and Milo and Nora Batis. Also, she is survived by stepdaughter, Janet Rossetti, of Sutersville, her daughter, Renae Dodaro and husband, Joseph, and grandchildren, Maria and Rachel; and stepdaughter, Karen Krevokuch and husband, Robert, of Hutchinson, and daughters, Kristy Krevokuch and Kelley Sevin and husband, Dennis, and grandchildren, Lauren and Caitlyn. As a charter member of the VFW Ladies Auxiliary of Herminie, she became the first treasurer of that the newly formed organization at the end of World War II. She was also a longtime member of St. Edward Roman Catholic Church in Herminie. As an avid reader, she always had a novel close by, so you could always find her doing what she enjoyed most, reading and working crossword puzzles in her spare time. As per her wishes, she requested that in lieu of flowers a donation, in her name, be made to Society of St. Vincent de Paul Food Pantry - Sacred Heart Catholic Church, 260 High St., Mt. Holly, NJ 08060. Friends will be received from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday at the JOSEPH W. NICKELS FUNERAL HOME INC., 404 Sewickley Ave., Herminie, PA 15637, 724-446-7251. A funeral Mass will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Saturday in St. Edward Church, Herminie. Interment will follow in Westmoreland County Memorial Park, Hempfield Township.
