Mary Alyce Vota, 83 of West Newton, passed away Sunday, July 17, 2022 in UPMC East, Monroeville, with her family by her side. She was born Nov. 30,1938, in Versailles, a daughter of the late Harry C. and Mary A. (Brothers) Thorne. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her brother, Harry E. Thorne, infant sister, Doris Jean, and lifelong friend, Shirley Rosengarth. Mary was an active member for years at The New Mars Hill Baptist Church and was a Sunday school teacher. She also belonged to the Mars Hill Woman’s Club and was a Girl Scout leader. She loved to paint and even took painting classes. She enjoyed going to yard sales and auctions, dogs, watching Chanel 40, Jim Bakker and Jimmy Swaggart, and listening to and singing hymns. Spending time with her family and grandchildren always made her happy. Always telling them they were her Blessings from God. All of them have many fond memories of riding down the road with Grammy and her pulling over to take pictures of a falling down barn or seeing wildflowers and everyone getting out to pick them. She also loved talking on the phone with her sister-in-law, Connie daily. Mary is survived by her loving husband of 68 years, John M. Vota; two daughters, Beverly Lancaster of New Alexandria and Barbara (Donald) Castor of Glassport; nine, special grandchildren, Carrie Nelson (Steven), Melissa Leonard (Christopher “Joe” Smith), Drew ( Cheyenne) Lancaster, Andrew (Billie Jo) Takach, Laine (Wesley) Cryder, Tracey Shvarts, Shane Smith, Haley Smith and Riley Wright; eighteen, special great-grandchildren, Jordan (Misty), Tonya, Justin, Madison, Emily, Kristian, John, Gwyneth, Alyx, Kayla, Cory, Briana, Keaton, Benton, Nathan, Isabel, Lillian, Kathryn, Zoey, Eli and Ezra; two, special great-great-grandchildren, Hazel and Henry; numerous nieces and nephews great-nieces and great-nephews. Mary will be dearly missed by her family, friends and neighbors. Private visitation, services and interment in Mars Hill Baptist Cemetery were held last week, per Mary’s wishes. JOSEPH W.
